So in this way when we got free WiFi anywhere, it’s very appreciating and satisfactory. It saves your mobile data and provides you with a way to stay connected to the internet for free.

However, it is not quite safe to use public Wifi. Might be there is a malicious malware associated with the connection. As a single connection is available for so many users so you couldn’t get an idea about people attention and their source of approach towards your data.

All these are just alarming conditions one should know. It doesn’t mean you are not allowed to connect your device with Wifi available at hotels, airports, café etc. you just need to take appropriate precautions so your device and data are in safe hands. Now, let’s head to the guide on Public Wifi usage Security threats & solutions:

How to make Public Wifi Safe and Secured:

Here is a list by which you can have a secured Wifi at public places, you can enjoy free Wifi along with making your personal data safe and secured,

Discriminate between Secured and Unsecured Connections:

Normally there are two types of public Wifi networks. A completely open network, which allows you to log on automatically. The open network will not be asked you about any info. You just need to click the connect option and will be done by your laptop or smartphone. This is not enough secure if you need to use this type of network make sure the connection will be set for a short period of time.

The second type of Public network demands you to sign up and enter details like your contact number and email address. To have access to the system you might be entered username and password. This type of connections is either offered by a cellular company or local coffee shop. This type of networks is safe because your personal details are saved and hackers aren’t usually interested in personal details.

Another way to have a secure Wifi connection is, try to ask barista about which network is best or safe to connect. They will inform you about the official one. Which will be a good option for you.

Turn Off Sharing:

Normally we want to turn on our personal settings for our comfort like share files, printers etc. This is good for networks you are using at home or office but when you are using public place and using Wifi it is not a safe option.

To turn off this option, if you are Mac OS user simply go to system preferences> sharing and uncheck all the options. For Windows users, go to Control Panel> Network and Inetrnet> Network and Sharing centre. Here click Change Advanced Sharing settings. You should turn off both network discovery and file and printer sharing.

Turn Off Wifi when not in use:

If you are at a public place and login to public Wifi then try to turn off it while you are not using it. It will make you secured. It is very easy and simple when you want to reconnect to the internet then switch it back. It will take a few seconds.

For a laptop, if you are using windows then click on the wireless icon to make it turn off. For Mac OS search for wifi icon on the top right-hand corner of the screen, turn it off. This will make your system safe and secured. You can switch on it again when you need it.

Secure Sensitive Information:

While you are using Public Wifi it is advised to avoid to use information related to your bank account. It is not a good idea to go for online shopping, internet banking or any other activity which involves bank details. You might expose your personal details like passwords credit pin etc.

Also, it is very precarious to fill out bank details on a web form, credit card information etc when you are connected to Public Wifi. If you are in a condition that you urgently need to use your bank details then turn on your mobile data. It is not much time consuming but will secure you a lot.

Cling to Protected Websites:

It is important to know that whether your websites is secured or not while you are using Public Wifi. HTTPS stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol. It is an encrypted protocol through which your data is transferred to the website you are using. This data is sent by your browser.

It is not necessary that all the websites are secured by HTTPS. You need to identify whether it is or not. To identify this search for the Padlock icon in the browser after your website address.  For instance, Facebook and Gmail use the HTTPS protocol, and your data using these are safe.

To make your search safe everywhere it is important to install a browser plugin with the name ‘HTTPS Everywhere’. This Plugin force you to open the secured version of the site but again keep in your mind that if the secured version of the website is not available you go for unsecured version. So it is important to know about website security.

VPN Usage:

VPN, Virtual Private Network is an encrypted program which actually encrypts all outgoing and incoming data for your device. VPN can secure your device for open Wifi and secure you from hackers too. You can search the best VPN according to your need. Some VPN introduced specially for Wifi protection you can go for them.

You can also use VPN for accessing restricted websites like Hulu, BBC iPlayer, US Netflix etc. It uses an intermediary server to send the internet data so your current location is replaced and you appear somewhere else. Best VPN options, in my opinion, are CyberGhost, IPVanish, NordVPN etc.

Keep Your Software Updated:

We are using different soft wares for our devices, this software is continuously improved by developers for safety and other purposes. If we update the software we have a secured version and can’t be hacked easily.

Most importantly whenever you antivirus asked you to update the software you should do it immediately. This installation must be followed by a secured connection from your office or home.

Obey Smart Browsing Principle:

Practical hints are obvious mandatory to keep you secured but here another suggestion which is not practical but important and work too. Using a strong password is also a trick to secure your device for an open network. You can use a combination of uppercase, lowercase, numbers etc to make your password strong.

Two-factor authentication is also essential to make accounts safe. This is uniquely important for social media accounts, banking, email accounts etc. it is obligatory to log out all the account before you leave for using a public network. Set your device to ‘Forget the Network’, this will prevent automatic login.

Enable Your Firewall:

A firewall can also protect you from hackers and malware. The Firewall present in Windows or Mac OS is not provided with advanced features but it is a useful tool to hide you from hackers. It can act as a boundary between trusted and untrusted networks.

Firewall judge all the internet traffic based on security parameters and decide whether to accept or reject it. To enable Firewall in Mac OS just go to

System Preferences> Security & Privacy> Firewall

Similarly, for Windows, go to Control Panel > System and Security> Windows Firewall.

How you get hacked Using Open Networks:

Now you are able to secure yourself by using an open network. but you should know how can hacker steal your data. you should follow me till the end to get more information,

DNS Spoofing:

This is actually used to convert human-readable domain names to a computer readable. DNS server manages the incoming and outgoing internet data. For instance, when you want to access Facebook, you enter ‘Facebook.com’ on a browser, first of all, it connects to the DNS server. The server gets you back with IP address which is used by your device to open the Facebook.

DNS server can be harmful if the hacker gets access and change some information. You become a Victim of Phishing attack if hacker control over the server. This type of hacking attempts can be devastating on public networks. The hacker only needs to control over one system and thousands of connected devices are disrupting. This leads you in big trouble.

Phishing Scams:

Phishing is like a robbery, but this robbery is done by hackers using your bank account details. For this purpose, they just need your personal information like credit card information or bank details. They try to conceal as a link along with official sounding email or by using other sources of communication.

Hackers firstly, hack the system then proceed to target the particular device by sending a malicious email. As soon as the user put information in given link money is cleaned out instantly. In 2015, Austrailian comedian Casey Talbot was robbed of more than 10,000  US$ from his personal account while connected to open Wifi network in Sydney airport. Most important suggestion by me never ever does any financial activity over the public network.

Packet Sniffing:

A Packet sniffer is a strong software use by the system to examine the internet traffic. This software helps an administrator to make a steady and continuous flow of traffic by removing all cumbersome issues on the network.

But here again, an intruder with wicked intent could enter into the software and use it to examine all the traffic in the system. Again the objective is similar that one can steal your personal information like user IDs, Passwords, credit card information or bank details. Another downside of this is intruder remain undetectable when he infiltrates to the system and stealing your data so this becomes a dangerous attack.

Packet Sniffing attacks can be carried out in three ways. The first one can be done by an employee of the firm who can access the internal LAN and can control over the traffic. The second one is related to the wireless Sniffing, a hacker gets control of the system through the network. This can be possible easily when companies forget to change the default settings of the router. Third one belongs to spoofing methods, in this way hackers attack the DNS and get your information by breaking the firewall of your device or system.

Man in the Middle Attacks:

Intruders use this technique to interrupt the connection between two sources like your device and the network you are connected. The flow of data is disrupted by the snooper and allow them to take your precious information like credit card details and bank information.

Man in Middle Attacks is particularly prevailing on open wifi sources. Hackers actually offer wifi connection with the name like ‘FeePublicWifi’ to fascinate users. once a user connects to the server they have a complete access to your browsing session and all the data it contains. They also have access to your stored cookies or login information in the bi size packets of data.

The only way to identify a rogue connection is to identify the login procedure or authentication. Trustworthy networks always ask about your personal information or give you a condition to agreeing to a ‘term of service’ before giving you access to the server. If a network allows you to connect automatically without any data or information then be careful this type of network should be avoided.
